DENTAL FILES EPISODE 1, 2015 SYNOPSIS
THIS MONTH'S COVER CD
PROFESSOR MARK BARTOLD AM -- WHAT'S NEW IN PERIO?
Over the past several years, the thinking around and
approach to periodontal therapy has changed considerably.
Periodontitis is no longer regarded as a straightforward
bacterial infection, but rather a quite complex ecogenetic
disease with genetic and environmental influences that vary
from one individual to another.
Our first guest for this episode is extremely well placed to
provide the update on periodontics you've been waiting for!
With over 200 articles published in the field of
periodontology, Professor Mark Bartold became a Member
of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his contributions
to periodontal research and teaching. Mark is presently
Professor and Director of the Colgate Australian Clinical
Dental Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. Mark
is also editor of the Australian Dental Journal and sits on the
editorial board of eight international dental journals.
We are very privileged to have Mark as a regular guest on
Dental Files and in this segment our Dental Files interviewer,
Dr Eryn Agnew, took the opportunity to ask Mark "What's
New in Perio?"
DR GERALDINE MOSES -- MEDICINE USE AND AGE
Dr Geraldine Moses is a Doctor of Clinical Pharmacy
and works part-time in the Academic Practice Unit at
Brisbane's Mater Hospital. Geraldine also consults clinically
to organisations such as the Health Quality Complaints
Commission, the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the
National Prescribing Service.
Geraldine has been providing specialist drug information to
members of ADA Queensland since 2010, and in November
2012 the ADA Federal Council approved the introduction
of ADA Pharma Advice, which was implemented nationally
in February 2013. All ADA members can access free
pharmaceutical advice from Geraldine by contacting her via
email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Members can also text
message a question or call Geraldine on 0419 752 528.
Dental Files recently caught up with Geraldine to talk about
medicine use in the very young as well as the very old. In this
interview, Geraldine provides guidance and resources for dose
calculation in the extremes of age. She also discusses poly-
pharmacy and the current trend of de-prescribing, with our
interviewer, Professor Ian Meyers.
DR BRAD WRIGHT -- ETHICS AND PROFITABILITY
Dr Brad Wright graduated from The University of Queensland
in 1982 with a Bachelor of Dental Science. Brad is a well-
recognised international presenter and a co-founder of the
Australian College of Dental Education, which runs post-
graduate business and clinical education for dentists.
Brad completed his Bachelor of Law degree with Honours at
Deakin University in 1998 and was called to the Bar in March
2011. Brad works as a Barrister full-time from his chambers in
the CBD of Brisbane and maintains a strong interest in Health
In this segment, Dental Files interviewer and researcher, Dr
Sarah Jones joins Brad to ask him about the conflicts that exist
in the relationship between enjoying work, being profitable
and having an ethical business and she asks for advice on
what to do if you have a complaint made against you.
DR DANIEL POTICNY -- DIGITAL DENTISTRY
Many dentists would be forgiven for thinking that digital
dentistry is costly and requires further development before
it is ready for widespread implementation. Our final guest is
one man who is ready to convince you that the time to adopt
digital technologies is now!
Dr Daniel Poticny graduated from Ohio State University and
the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1983. At present Dan runs
a private practice in Dallas, Texas and holds the position
of Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the University of
Michigan, School of Dentistry, Department of Cariology
and Restorative Sciences Computerised Dentistry Graduate
In our final interview for this episode, Dan encourages
all dentists to investigate and invest in digital technology
and discusses the usefulness of the data that can be
gathered from digital scanning. Dan is joined by Dental Files
interviewer, Dr Kunal Pandya.
As a member organisation, understanding members' views
on key issues affecting the profession is critical if the Association
is to adequately represent its members in the many existing fora.
The ADA relies heavily on its Standing and Special Purpose
Committees to inform the work of the Secretariat. However, it
is also important to supplement these views with information
from different sectors of the profession.
Comments and questions are received from members
on an ad-hoc basis but we are keen to try and enhance
the opportunities for members to engage with their
professional organisation and elected representatives.
A dedicated email account has now been set up for this
purpose and we encourage members who would like to
offer input into submissions, policies or simply wish to
provide feedback on services offered can drop us a line at:
