federal council report
The Federal Council of the Australian Dental Association Inc.
(ADA) met at its St Leonards premises on 27 and 28 August 2015.
Major items covered at the meeting included the following:
The President congratulated Dr Stephen Liew upon his election as
President of the ADA Victorian Branch and noted the attendances
of Drs Sabrina Manickam, Julee Birch and Kang Kim to their first
Federal Council meeting.
A report from the CEO was presented advising on the
implementation of the revised structure of the ADA Secretariat.
The report indicated the implementation of the restructure had
now been completed but was subject to ongoing review. Federal
Council noted Ms Judy Badans would be leaving her employment
with the Association on 4 September 2015. Federal Council
thanked Judy for her exemplary and dedicated long service of over
21 years to the Association.
The Budget was presented for the year ending June 2015. The
outcome for the financial year was very close to the budgeted
outcome. Income from the rental properties and investments
continued to provide a healthy contribution to revenues and
represented a substantial non-member contribution to income.

A membership report was received which revealed ADA membership
of practising dentists continued to increase. Of the student members
56% were female and 44% were male. Practitioner membership
continued to have female membership at 38% with male
membership at 62%. The majority of membership continued to be in
the 25-34-year old range followed by the 35-44-year old range.
Reports provided in relation to the News Bulletin, Australian
Dentist e-Newsletter, Website, ADA IR & HR Advisory Service,
PharmaAdvice indicated wide acceptance of these services by the
membership. When members have comments about these services
please make them known to the ADA office.
Considerable discussion and formulation of plans took place as
regards the dental workforce and the conduct of private health
insurers vis-à-vis health providers.
Minor amendments to the Constitution have been proposed
and these constitutional changes will be referred for adoption at
a Special General Meeting of the Association to be held on 13
Amendments to the By-laws were also passed. By-laws in relation
to Committees, Standing Committees, Standing Orders and
Awards were adopted. In addition there was a new By-Law XVI

Honorary membership of the Australian Dental Association has
been granted to the newly appointed President of the New
Zealand Dental Association, Dr Susan Gorrie.
DENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2015
Reports were provided indicating the extensive media coverage
received in relation to the 2015 Dental Health Week Campaign.
Highlights from the campaign included in excess of 150 media
placements; a media reach for the week alone at 3.755 million
Australians; distribution of over 17,000 fact sheets. In conjunction
considerable publicity was achieved in respect of the ADA and
Sports Medicine Australia joint production of their Mouthguard
Policy. Federal Council noted the success of this year’s DHW had
exceeded past efforts and expectations and congratulated the
Oral Health Committee and secretariat for their outstanding
contribution to this event.
Mr David Owen was appointed Chairman of the Foundation with
Dr Karin Alexander appointed Vice-Chairman.
A new policy document entitled ‘Neurotoxins and Dental Fillers in
Dentistry’ was adopted as a new Policy Statement 6.30 within the
sub category of Dental Practice.
Amendments to the following policy statements were agreed:
Community oral health promotion: Emergency overseas dental
Areas of practice adjunctive to dentistry
Dentistry and third parties
The Australian Schedule of Dental Services and Glossary
Dental Acts, the National Law and Boards
Credentialling for hospital practice
Dental amalgam waste management
Custom-made dental prostheses and appliances
Partnering for better health – dentists and patients
Safety of dental amalgam
Dento-maxillofacial cone beam volumetric tomography
The next meeting of Federal Council will be held on 12 and
13 November 2015.
