DR ALWYN WONG
Alwyn Wong is a registered specialist
orthodontist and member of the Australian
Society of Orthodontics. He obtained
both his dental and specialist orthodontic
qualifications from the University of
Melbourne Dental School and maintains a
private practice in Hawthorn East, Victoria.
This interview with Dr Wong is conducted by Drs Kate Amos and Sam
Rosehill and explores when and how best to consider use of early
intervention orthodontics with a particular emphasis on understanding
the complexity of patient needs and benefits.
THE BROKEN DOWN TOOTH
DR STEWART COTTIS
Stewart Cottis graduated from the University
of Sydney with Honours in 1990. He
served as a commissioned officer in the
Australian Defence Force for 15 years. Dr
Cottis completed his specialist training
in prosthodontics at the University of
Melbourne in 1999. He now works solely in
private specialist practice in Melbourne.
In this interview, Drs Kate Amos and Sam Rosehill discuss with Dr Cottis
the conditions faced when restoring the broken down tooth with a
particular emphasis on the role of patients understanding and taking
ownership for their dental care decisions.
DR LUAN NGO
Luan Ngo graduated with honours from the
University of Melbourne in 1999. He worked
in both public and private practice until 2003
when he commenced a PhD in the field of
periodontics and completed his specialist
training in periodontics in 2009. Currently, he
works in full-time private practice and is an
Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne.
This interview with Dr Ngo examines to what extent current periodontal
treatment can manage advanced disease, and where do we draw
the line to label a tooth as hopeless and consign it to extraction.
The interviewer is Dr Kunal Pandya.
REGULAR I CPD
The Dental Files team travelled to Melbourne to record this special
edition of Dental Files (Program 2, 2016). The team were warmly
welcomed by the ADA Victoria Branch who are strong supporters of
the Dental Files program. The DF team very much appreciated the
support of Garry Pearson (CEO), Caroline Kaur (CPD and Training
Manager), and Nancy Mai (CPD Coordinator).
Recordings were completed at the ADA Victoria Branch's CPD event
'Is it treatable and how?'. The program looked at the kind of everyday
problems dentists face and what new materials and techniques are
available to better care for patients.
Interviews featured on this month's Dental Files CD included six
specialist speakers who outlined their experiences and practical
advice during the program. The following is a brief synopsis of the
DR SUSAN HINCKFUSS
Dr Susan Hinckfuss completed both her
general dental training and specialist
paediatric training at the University of
Melbourne. Practising all aspects of
paediatric dentistry, she has a special interest
in the management of anxious children and
children with autism spectrum disorders.
Susan maintains private specialist paediatric dental practices in
Melbourne and Dandenong.
In this interview, Dr Hinckfuss explores with Drs Kate Amos and Sam
Rosehill restorative choices, correct diagnosis of the pulpal status
and appropriate pulp therapy, as well as planning pharmacological
and non-pharmacological behaviour management to help provide
comprehensive treatment of children.
ISSUES DR KURIEN MAMOOTIL
Kurien Mamootil completed his Bachelor of
Dental Science degree from the University of
Melbourne in 1994. He furthered his studies
in the specialist area of endodontics in 2002
and since then has achieved his Doctorate
of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics in
2004 from the University of Melbourne. His
specialist practice is in Geelong, Victoria.
The aim of Dr Kunal Pandya's interview with Dr Mamootil is to identify
those types of situations that may lead to procedural problems in
endodontics such as perforation and file fracture.
