Employees may receive Parental Leave pay before, after or at the same time as employer provided paid leave such as annual leave and long service leave. However, leave entitlements will not accrue in respect of Paid Parental Leave. InfORMATIOn fOR EMPLOYEES hoWandWhencanIcla I mpa I d parentalleave? Claims for Paid Parental Leave can be lodged up to three months prior to the birth or adoption of the child. Therefore, parents will be able to lodge claims for Paid Parental Leave from 1 October 2010 for children due to be born or adopted on or after 1 January 2011. Claims can be made online via the Centrelink website (www. centrelink.gov.au) or at the Family Assistance Office located in Medicare offices and Centrelink Customer Service Centres. hoW long doIhave tocla I mpa I d parentalleave? Employees may claim Paid Parental Leave within 52 weeks of the child’s birth or adoption. To receive the full 18 weeks, the start date of your Parental Leave pay must be within 33 weeks of the birth or adoption of the child. canIWorkWh I leIrece I ve pa I d parentalleave? Employees cannot work while receiving paid parental leave, but may engage with the workplace under the ‘Keeping in Touch’ provisions. This means that you may participate in certain activities at the workplace for up to 10 days from the birth or adoption of the child until the end of the Paid Parental Leave period without losing your entitlement. hoWmuch W I ll Ibepa I d? Payments will be made to eligible employees at the Federal Minimum Wage which is currently $570 a week, for a continuous period of up to 18 weeks. This comes to a total of $10,260 payable over the 18 week period. WhatIfIam acontractor or Self-employed? Contractors and those who are self-employed will also receive Paid Parental Leave as long as they satisfy the eligibility requirements set out in the work test. ISmy partner able tocla I mpa I d parentalleave? Only one parent can be regarded as the primary care giver at any point in time. In situations where the mother returns to work during the first year and has not used the full 18 weeks of Paid Parental Leave, Parental Leave pay may be transferred to their partner as long as the partner is also eligible.
