5 NOVEMBER 2010 The Federal Executive of the Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) met at its St Leonards premises on 14 and 15 October 2010. During the Federal Executive meeting, the following major items of interest were considered: • Federal Executive met with Ms Anne Skipper AM, the Facilitator appointed by the ADA to assist with the Strategy weekend being undertaken by the Federal Council on 29, 30, 31 October 2010. Feedback was obtained from Ms Skipper as to responses she had received from Councillors as to the major issues to be discussed at the Strategy weekend. A draft agenda for the weekend was presented by Ms Skipper and adopted by Federal Executive. • Mr Brett Martin, a financial advisor from Hillross Financial Services Limited met with Federal Executive to discuss the ADA's investment portfolio with Hillross. Mr Martin reported that investments were proceeding satisfactorily. • A draft Reserves Policy detailing financial reserves to be maintained by the ADA for the future was considered. Some modification to the draft Reserves Policy was undertaken and the final draft will be forwarded to Federal Council for consideration at its November meeting. • The ADA's annual accounts and Concise Financial report for the year ended 30 June 2010 were approved and completed. • Federal Executive agreed to the adoption of a membership service provided by Alsco. Details of this will be published in a future edition of the News Bulletin. • Reports were received of meetings of the Constitution Committee, Honours and Awards Committee, Oral Health Committee, Rural Oral Health Advisory Panel, Dental Workforce and Education Committee, Continuing Professional Development Committee, Schedule and Third Party Committee, Dental Instruments, Material and Equipment, SPC on Dental Practice Accreditation, SPC on Dental Volunteers. • Appointment of the Editor of the Australian Dental Journal was discussed and a Special Purpose Committee will be created to review the position of Editor of the Australian Dental Journal. • Federal Executive received a report of a teleconference meeting between the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon, Dr Neil Hewson (ADA Inc. President), and Robert Boyd-Boland (ADA Inc. CEO). A report of the meeting will be submitted to Federal Council. • Further reports were received in relation to the ADA's dealings with Medicare Australia regarding audits of members being conducted by Medicare Australia in relation to dentist's participation in the Chronic Dental Disease Scheme. The CEO reported that he had met with David Hancock, Branch Manager Compliance -- Health Providers, Medicare Australia. A meeting with Minister for Human Services and Minister for Social Inclusion, Tanya Plibersek's Chief of Staff is to be conducted shortly. • A detailed report was provided by the Federal Sales and Event Manager, Oscar Van Elten in relation to progress of the 34th Australian Dental Congress 'Back to the Future Now and Tomorrow' to be held in Brisbane in 2011. Federal Executive heard preparations for the Congress are proceeding satisfactorily with the Early Bird Registration closing on 15 November 2010. Members are encouraged to register for the Congress as soon as possible. • Brief reports were received in relation to the Melbourne Congress 2013, Darwin Congress 2015 and Adelaide Congress 2017. • A report from ADAVB CEO, Garry Pearson was received in relation to his attendance at a Professions Reference Group meeting with Martin Fletcher, CEO of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. As a consequence, a notice has been published on the ADA member website regarding requirements for timely registration. Issues relating to the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) were also considered. • A consultation draft from the Australian Dental Council (ADC) on Professional Attributes and Competencies of the newly qualified Dental Hygienist/Dental Therapist/Oral Health Therapist were considered by Federal Executive. Comments in respect of this consultation draft will be prepared and provided to the ADC by 17 November 2010. Feedback from the Dental Workforce and Education Committee and others is being sought in respect of the consultation draft. It will also be recommended to Federal Council that Drs Neil Hewson and Bruce Noble be reappointed as ADA Inc.'s nominated Directors on the ADC for the period commencing at the conclusion of the ADC's annual general meeting on 26 November 2010. • The Chief Executive Officer reported upon developments with Professions Australia and noted that whilst Professions Australia remained in some financial difficulty it was successful in recruiting three new members to the group. Federal Council will be meeting on 18 and 19 November 2010 and Federal Executive next meet on 9 and 10 December 2010.
