News Bulletin : ADA News Bulletin December 2010
3 DECEMBER 2010 THANK YOU I am extremely honoured to have been elected Federal President of the ADA and I would like to express my gratitude to the members for their support. We are in interesting times and together we will be facing the challenges ahead. INTERESTING TIMES The political and dental landscapes in Australia are certainly different from that which existed in the past. Australia, for the first time in many decades, has a minority Federal government with all the political nuances that this brings. The Dental Board of Australia has replaced State and Territory Boards from 1 July 2010; practice accreditation is in the forefront of everybody's mind; e-Health is looming on the horizon and we have had a significant increase in the number of dental schools and thus the number of dentists entering the workforce will substantially increase in the near future. The ADA continues to be involved in these issues on behalf of the members. FEDERAL EXECUTIVE A new Federal Executive was established on Friday, 19 November 2010 comprising Karin Alexander (Vice President), Carmelo Bonanno (Treasurer), Rick Olive (Executive Councillor) and Hugo Sachs (Executive Councillor). This is a dedicated and talented team that will, with your Federal Council, be managing the diverse issues that arise in dentistry. YOUR NEW FEDERAL COUNCIL The composition of Federal Council may be noted on page 14 of this News Bulletin. However, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the retirement of two councillors in John E Matthews and Wayne M Ottaway. Both were marvellous contributors and supporters for the ADA over many years. It follows that Federal Council has now welcomed two new councillors in Andrew Barnes (Victoria) and Tom Higgins (Tasmania). Over the next Council term I am sure that Council will to continue to operate as a cohesive group with the interests of dentistry placed first and foremost. NEIL D HEWSON It was a pleasure to see our immediate past President elected to Honorary Life Membership at the AGM on Friday, 19 November 2010. Neil's commitment to the ADA Presidency over the last two years has been nothing short of extraordinary. Dentistry and the dental profession could not have had a stronger advocate and I applaud Neil for his efforts. May he enjoy a well earned rest. COMMITTEES The ADA Committee elections were also held on Friday, 19 November. It should be noted that the committees and the ADA staff are the powerhouse behind the ADA. Thanks are extended to a number of retiring Committee Chairmen who have worked tirelessly for the Association. These are David Houghton (Constitution), Ian Meyers (Dental Instruments Materials and Equipment), Helen McLean (Dental Workforce and Education), Philippa Sawyer (Oral Health), and Carmelo Bonanno (Schedule and Third Party). Also, the retiring committee members are thanked and they are Susan Hanlin, Chris Wilson, Michael Burrow, Susan Upham, John Davies, Wayne Ottaway and Martin Webb. SEASON'S GREETINGS Season's greetings are extended to all members and their families. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a sincere thank you to all the ADA staff for their efforts throughout the year. May you all enjoy time with family and friends over the break and look forward to an interesting and rewarding 2011. CONCLUSION In closing, I would like you to know that the Council, Executive and Committees are here to serve the members of the ADA. Please feel free to contact me (see details below) regarding issues that you may wish to discuss. As always constructive guidance is appreciated. Phone: 02 9906 4412 or email: email@example.com F.
