5 DECEMBER 2010 Federal Council of the Australian Dental Association Inc. met at its St Leonards premises on the 18 and 19 November 2010. The meeting extended congratulations to Dr Anne Stewart on being elected President of the Victorian Branch and Dr Angela Pierce as President--Elect of the South Australian Branch. Dr Andrew Barnes (Victoria) and Dr Tom Higgins (Tasmania) were welcomed to their first Council meeting. The major items covered at the meeting included the following: The Treasurer's report as to the financial position of the Association was received and accepted. Council reviewed the Auditors' report and Financial Statements and agreed to reappoint WHK Horwath as the Association's auditor for the 2010/2011 year. A financial reserves policy was adopted to allow for the development of appropriate reserves to assist in financial management of the Association. The Membership Statistics Report was received. Total membership of ADA Inc. (inclusive of student members) now exceeds 12,300. New guidelines for the ADA Seal of Approval Program were agreed to by Council. Details of these new guidelines will be published on the ADA website. Products will be required to undergo a periodic comprehensive review to ensure that safety and authenticity remain appropriate in light of any scientific developments that may have occurred in the interim period since initial granting of the Seal. Applications for new products to attain the ADA Seal will be received in the New Year. A number of changes to the Association's Constitution were discussed and were recommended to go to a Special General Meeting of the Association to be held on 15 April 2011. A number of changes to the Association's By-Laws were also agreed and details for these will be available on the ADA website. Federal Council considered developments in relation to members' participation in the Medicare Chronic Disease Program. Written reports by the Chief Executive Officer and correspondence between the ADA and Department in relation to Medicare were reviewed. A report on the activities of the Oral Health Committee was received. This dealt with the Committee's activities in 2010. It also considered the proposed actions for its mouthguard awareness campaign for 2011; its mini campaign for early 2011 on tooth bleaching; the babies and toddlers' campaign along with its plans for Dental Health Week 2011. The theme of the campaign will be a little different to the specific themed programs in the past and will have a more general focus on the mouth. Reports were received on the Association's dealings and contact with the Department of Health and Ageing. This included reports on interactions with the Health Minister, the Hon Nicola Roxon; Medicare Australia and various departmental officers. The Rural Oral Health Advisory Panel reported on its activities and panel members were elected. (See page 14 for details of the membership of all new ADA Standing Committees). A number of the submissions made by the ADA to various entities were reviewed. All submissions can be viewed in full by accessing the ADA website. The Dental Workforce and Education Committee reported on its activities, in particular on its work with the Industry Skills Council and Department of Education, Employment and Workforce Relations. Revised guidelines were agreed to on the ADA Study Grants for dental students from rural and remote regions and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dental students. A greater number of grants will be made and in some cases the amount of the grant increased. A comprehensive report was received on the ADA's 34th Congress and Exhibition in Brisbane 2011. Council reported satisfaction with the progress of the event. Federal Council also approved the appointment of the Local Organising Committee for the 2013 ADA's 35th Congress and Exhibition in Melbourne. A new Australian Dental Journal Editorial Advisory Board was appointed as follows: Professor Paul Abbott, Dr Thomas Boland, Associate Professor Ivan Darby, Associate Professor Mithran Goonewardene, Professor Alastair Goss, Associate Professor Kerrod Hallett, Professor Iven Klineberg, Professor Ian Meyers, Professor Eric Reynolds, Associate Professor Neil Savage, Professor John Spencer, Professor Grant Townsend and Professor Martin Tyas. The ADA's National Library Service was reviewed and proposals for development were considered. Drs Neil Hewson and Bruce Noble's nominations to the Australian Dental Council were ratified by Federal Council. The Dental Instruments Materials and Equipment Committee reported on its activities as did the Infection Control Committee, which outlined its review process for the ADA Guidelines for Infection Control.
