20 FEBRUARY 2011 Sports Day Wednesday, 30 March 2011 In preparation for a thought provoking, intellectually stimulating few days, the 34th Australian Dental Congress Local Organising Committee has arranged an afternoon of sporting challenges. You're invited to select a sport and enjoy the autumn sunshine on Wednesday afternoon before the scientific sessions commence on Thursday morning. So get a team together for bare foot bowls, dust off your golf clubs, challenge your partner to a game of tennis, or gather a reunion group for an afternoon of sailing on the high seas! All sporting activities will finish in time for delegates to join the Welcome Event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. We encourage all those that are interested in participating in the Sports Day events, to register that interest by forwarding an email to email@example.com with your name and phone number and sport selection. We can then arrange to send you the relevant Registration Form with additional information. If you have already notified us, we will be in contact shortly. BARE FOOT BOWLS For those who think golf is played with a bat; and might as well as have a shower as go sailing; in other words, for the laid back super sports amongst you who like good old fashioned fun, this is the sport for you... Kick off your shoes and get some grass under your feet at Bare Foot Lawn Bowls. Resting next to the Brisbane River, Merthyr Bowls Club in New Farm is the setting for this fun and relaxed afternoon. You don't need any bowling experience to enjoy this social game. However, friendly instructors are close by to get things started and provide tips to outclass your opponents. GOLF Indooroopilly Golf Club is Brisbane's premier golf course, boasting a 36 hole championship course, recently undergoing an impressive upgrade by Ross Watson Golf Course Architecture. Players will tee off on the members course in a mini shot gun start. For everyone from the serious golfer to the occasional hack, and everything in between, this single Stableford competition is sure to be a great start to Congress week. TENNIS As part of the Sports Day, prior to the Australian Dental Congress 2011 there will be a tennis tournament held on Wednesday, 30 March 2011at the new Queensland Tennis Centre in the very appropriately named Brisbane suburb of Tennyson on the banks of the Brisbane River. This is an $82 million state-of-the-art centre with the showpiece being the 5,500 seat Pat Rafter Arena that hosted its first international tournament, the Brisbane International in January 2009. The Centre features a total of 23 tennis courts including 17 plexicushion hard-courts which will be available for our use at the Congress tournament. The aim is to have a fun day of doubles tennis that gives as many people as possible the opportunity to play on Centre Court. You will have the chance to play in the same stadium that has attracted world class players including Samantha Stosur, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Andy Roddick, and Marcos Baghdatis. While the stadium capacity of 5,500 will probably not be required for the Congress Tournament it will certainly be fun to play in the same arena and use our imaginations! The emphasis will be on having a light hearted, enjoyable day of doubles competition. Whether this is a mixed doubles, women's doubles or a men's doubles competition -- or a combination -- will be determined when numbers have been finalized and the preferences of participants have been determined. It is a great opportunity to have a social game of tennis in a fun environment in a world class facility. Come and join us! SAILING The South Passage is a 100 foot long, gaff rigged schooner, built in 1993. A coach will depart from the Convention Centre to take you to the yacht club. Following a quick briefing you will set sail. Enthusiasts can join the crew and experience the thrill of sailing, others may prefer to sit back and enjoy the sea breeze in your hair! 34th Australian Dental Congress
