30 FEBRUARY 2011 1 July 2010 DENTAL FEES SURVEY dental fees survey The Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) conducts a national Dental Fees Survey of members on an annual basis. Information was sought on fees usually charged in private practices as at 1 July 2010. The following article presents a summary of results for general practitioners by state, capital city and rest of state; and for Australian specialists. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA • The survey was once again carried out for the Association by ACA Research (North Sydney). • Doan Tran of ACA Research worked with input from ADA provided by PD Barnard. • Members were sent a questionnaire requesting their usual fee charged for 70 items of service. • The items on the questionnaire were the same for 70 items surveyed in 2009. • The items were approved by ADA Executive and covered an estimated 88% of items of services provided by dentists. • The questionnaire was sent to a 50% sample of general practitioner (GP) members in private practices in larger States and to a 100% sample in SA, WA, Tasmania, ACT and NT. • The questionnaire was sent to a 100% sample of specialists in private practice in all States. • Mailing of questionnaires was delayed for two months until August to enable dentists to make arrangements to have fees sent directly by DeIDC from their practice management software. • Follow-up letters went to those in the sample whose name had not been noted on an envelope. • Confidentiality of respondent identity was maintained. • There were 4,983 questionnaires sent out with 2,949 useable returns (293 through DeIDC).
