5 MARCH 2011 The Federal Executive of the Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) met at its St Leonards premises on 10 and 11 February 2011. During the meeting, the following major items of interest were considered: • Presentations were made by Ms Carla Allen, Senior Financial Planning Manager, NAB Financial Planning, and by Mr Brett Martin, Financial Adviser, Hillross Financial Services Limited. Each presented reports upon the financial results of the company's investment of ADA Inc. funds. Certain modifications to the mode of investment of the funds were requested. Each of the investment funds reported favourable returns. Other financial reports were reviewed with the Treasurer, Dr Bonanno, reporting finances were in accordance with budget. • There was lengthy consideration given to the preparation of the ADA's 2011/2012 Budget. Deliberations in relation to the budget included review of various developments to infrastructure at the Secretariat and of member services provided by the ADA. Modifications to the budget and further information have been requested and will be reviewed again at the March 2011 Federal Executive Meeting. • Reports from the ADA's IT Consultant, Mr Steve Thomlinson, outlining plans for IT development in the 2011/2012 budget period were reviewed. Federal Executive approved expenditure on enhancements to the ADA's internet connectivity; further development to the web-based agenda system for ADA Committees; exploring the introduction of a single (ADA Inc. and Branch) identifying number for all members of the Australian Dental Association; the preparation of a Business Continuity Plan for the ADA and general review of the membership database system. • Federal Executive met with Professor Peter Barnard to discuss the development of a 'History of Dentistry in Australia' web page for ADA Inc. Members should watch out for requests for information from Professor Barnard in connection with this project in coming months. • Federal Executive extended congratulations to members of the ADA that were the recipients of Australia Day Honours, namely Dr Terry K Pitsikas (WA) -- Member of the Order of Australia; Dr Jamie A Robertson (Vic) -- Member of the Order of Australia; and Dr Anthony M Zahra (NSW) -- Medal of the Order of Australia. • Further work was done in developing the outcomes of the ADA Inc. Strategy Workshop conducted in Adelaide in October 2010. This will continue at the March 2011 Meeting to enable a report to be forwarded to the ADA Inc. Federal Council Meeting in April 2011. • Approval was given to provide funding of $10,000 to the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health for its national oral health promotion clearing house. • Dr Karin Alexander was re-appointed as the ADA Inc.'s nominee as a member of the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health -- Expert Advisory Committee for the 2011-2012 term of office. • An ADA Inc. Graduate Student Scholarship was granted to Dr Harleen Kumar from the University of Melbourne. • Federal Executive considered a report in relation to recent ADAInteract webinars. Recent webinars presented were as follows: -- December 2010 -- Orofacial pain management by Professor Christopher Peck. -- January 2011 -- Indications and limitations of cone beam volumetric tomography by Professor Paul Monsour. -- February 2011 -- Oral mucosal disease by Associate Professor Michael McCullough. Federal Executive noted the popularity and high quality of these webinar presentations. Members are advised to access these webinars via the ADA website in order to access valuable continuing professional development (CPD). • A very comprehensive update was provided by the Federal Sales and Event Manager, Mr O van Elten, in relation to developments regarding the 2011 Brisbane ADA Congress. The financial reports for the Congress were noted and received. Registration numbers are above expectation. Members are strongly advised to register early for the Congress to avoid disappointment. • Federal Executive received the resignation of Professor Iven Klineberg from the Australian Dental Journal Editorial Advisory Board. Federal Executive wished to extend its gratitude to Professor Kleinberg's for his service to the Editorial Advisory Board over many years. • A review of the ADA Dental Files CD service and the ADA National Library service was undertaken. The CEO reported upon negotiations in respect of each service and Federal Executive has asked for further exploration of the contractual terms to be undertaken. • Federal Executive also considered proposals for the delivery of further CPD through Digital Media to members. The CEO reported on negotiations and Federal Executive will further consider the issue when it next meets. • Calls for submissions from the Dental Board of Australia on a range of topics were considered. Federal Executive has sought the assistance of Committees in relation to the preparation of a response and submissions will be lodged in response by mid- March 2011. • Periodic reports were received by Federal Executive from the ADA Standing and Special Purpose Committees. Federal Executive will next meet in Brisbane on 29 and 30 March 2011 in conjunction with the 34th Australian Dental Congress.
