38 MARCH 2011 A COMPLETE SOLUTIOn TO nEEDLE STICk InJURIES W9 recently announced that the launch of the INSAFE DENTAL SYRINGE in Australia. The INSAFE system provides protection against needle stick injury without imposing restrictions on the operator. The INSAFE SYRINGE handles like a traditional syringe, uses standard dental needles and cartridges and doesn’t require any change in the operator‘s technique. Features include a regular syringe unit with a pop-up sleeve that locks around the needle after an injection to ensure that reloading the unit with a new anaesthetic cartridge or dismounting the needle won’t expose the needle tip. The syringe also includes a specially designed sharps container that disconnects the needle from the syringe in a single twisting movement, without the need for manual handling. It can also be dismantled for sterilisation. The INSAFE DENTAL SYRINGE was developed by UK-based Astek Innovations and received the coveted Product Innovation of The Year Award at the 2009 Dental Awards in London. Taking five years to develop, the syringe protects against high risk areas of use in dental surgeries, such as cleaning, disposing of needles and during transfer between dental staff. The INSAFE DENTAL SYRINGE has also passed clinical trials in Australia.
