News Bulletin : ADA News Bulletin May 2011
19 MAY 2011 The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre provided an ideal venue for the 4,500 registrants who attended the recent Australian Dental Congress. The Welcome Function kicked off the 'Back to the Future' theme with a wonderful retro event complete with a Buddy Holly tribute band. Even a De Lorean of movie fame completed the scene. Old acquaintances were renewed and new ones made during a night of relaxed celebration. OFFICIAL OPENING AND ADA AWARDS On Thursday morning, Congress was officially opened by the ADA Federal President, Dr Shane Fryer, who also presented ADA Honorary Life Membership to Dr Neil Hewson; ADA Service Medallions to Dr Wayne Ottoway and Professor Laurence Walsh; and ADA Award of Merit to Mr Ian Crawford. Dr Fryer also presented the Australian Dental Journal Awards of Excellence. OPENING PLENARY SESSION The Opening Plenary Session was chaired by Dr Rod Marshall who introduced the three international keynote speakers: Professors Lyndon Cooper, Ken Hargreaves and Adrian Lussi. All speakers were in high demand with several sessions filled to capacity. With three concurrent lecture sessions over three and a half days, members were able to experience many excellent speakers across a broad range of topics. DENTAL INDUSTRY EXHIBITION The dental industry exhibition was one of the largest on record. From interdental cleaners through to the latest dental equipment -- there was something for everyone. The morning and afternoon teas and lunches were superb. With a unique radial design, the exhibition space was open and easy to navigate around all the exhibitors. GALA DINNER Decorated with a spectacular futuristic theme, the Gala Dinner held on the Saturday evening was another marvellous experience with the crowd dancing away until almost midnight. CLOSING SESSION The Congress wrapped up on Sunday morning at the final Plenary Session with each keynote speaker presenting a concise summary of their lectures. Following morning tea, Professor Ian Meyers lead the audience in a stimulating discussion across clinical and professional issues. Dr Neil Hewson, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 35th Congress to be held in Melbourne in 2013, was introduced, following which Dr Shane Fryer officially closed Congress. It has been a wonderful privilege for me to Chair the LOC for the 34th ADC in Brisbane. I would like again to publically acknowledge the work of the other LOC members, Drs Don Anning, Lloyd Wong, Rod Marshall, Rachel Garraway and David Ashton. Also, the ADA staff Oscar van Elten, Jessica Cooper and Stephanie Zhang worked tirelessly to create a great event. See you in Melbourne in 2013!
