The announcement on 30 May after a count- back vote also means that he has become the first Indigenous Australian to be elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly. Christopher Bourke grew up in country Victoria where his father was a school teacher. He graduated from Melbourne University in 1982, where he was the first Indigenous Australian to complete a dental degree. From there, he gained postgraduate diplomas in public health and oral implants. For 16 years Chris ran a successful private dental practice in Canberra. During this time, he also used his dental skills at the local community level -- through pro bono work at the Queanbeyan Public Dental Clinic -- and at a national policy level as the President of the Indigenous Dentist's Association of Australia. Dr Bourke said of his election to the ACT Legislative Assembly, "I've lived in the electorate of Ginninderra for 17 years. My children have gone to local schools and on to University. Since coming to Canberra in 1993 I've involved myself in many community organisations in health, education, sport, art, youth and service. Listening to people and helping them with their problems is what I've done for a living." ELECTION OF Canberra dentist Dr Christopher Bourke. Chris remains committed to improving the oral health of Canberrans as he has done for the past 17 years. The ADA looks forward to watching Dr Bourke's career as a Member of the Legislative Assembly progress and congratulates him on his achievement.
