OrdEr 1 CrOWn And gET ThE SECOnd FrEE*. Most ADA members will be aware that Dental Health Week is an annual activity which aims to raise public awareness of an oral health issue. Depending on the theme, there will be different target audiences and often the campaign is packaged and distributed mainly to the public. However, this year one of the main target audiences is you, ADA dentists. This year we are calling upon our members, the dentists of Australia, to start talking about oral cancer. Our patients come to us for all kinds of advice on oral health. They trust us to provide complete diagnosis of their oral health. Dentists are the most appropriate health professionals to start raising awareness of oral cancer and other oral diseases. In the weeks leading up to ADA Dental Health Week, you will receive a host of information to assist in communicating with your patients about this important, and potentially life-saving, issue. In this issue of the News Bulletin, you will find a Dental Health Week poster. Please display this prominently in your dental surgery. Also in this issue is the second of four articles on Dental Health Week topics, written by Dr Aggie Frydrych on Oral Cancer Screening. The first article by Associate Professor Richard Logan (oral pathologist) was published in the June News Bulletin on the topic of common oral pathologies. In August and September, articles on common oral pathologies and lifestyle factors by Professor Ian Meyers and Dr Paul Hammans (oral and maxillofacial surgeon) will be published. The ADA will update you with more information via your email. There will be additional information and reminders about Dental Health Week, as well as links to the website: www.dentalhealthweek.com.au and fact sheets. We will also provide access to a video demonstration of how to perform a soft tissue examination for oral pathologies, including oral cancer. This is being specially produced for ADA members for Dental Health Week. Please accept this invitation to get involved in ADA Dental Health Week. Putting in a little bit of time could reap great rewards for your patients. Peter Alldritt Chairman Oral Health Committee get ready for ADA Dental Health Week 1-7 AUgUSt 2011 committee report
