News Bulletin : ADA News Bulletin July 2011
27 July 2011 Survey results indicate the ADAinteract–CPD Webinars are proving to be an essential service for rural and remote dentists. Responses received from participants are a universal ‘Yes’ as to the efficacy and convenience of being able to access continuing education online. The ADA Inc. is delighted with the results achieved from the 2011 webinar program. Since the article published in the March 2011, News Bulletin, two webinars were held in April and May. The following is an overview of these webinars and the presenters. THE USE Of ORAL APPLIAnCES In ObSTRUCTIvE SLEEP APnOEA The topic for the April webinar, presented by Dr Robert Shea on Friday, 29 April was ‘The use of oral appliances in obstructive sleep apnoea’. Dr Robert Shea has worked in public and private dental practice in Australia and in the United Kingdom for the last 30 years. Dr Shea developed an interest in sleep dentistry eight years ago. He is currently running a public sleep clinic in the Adelaide Dental Hospital as well as in private practice in the sleep dentistry area. Recently, he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Dental Sleep Medicine at the Adelaide University Dental School. Dr Shea has chaired the Organising Committee of the three-day Oral Sleep Medicine Course from 2008 to 2010 held in Adelaide and Melbourne and last year in Christchurch. This inaugural course in Australia with an emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach was initiated by Dr Shea and is associated with the Australasian Sleep Association. Participant reaction to Dr Shea’s knowledge and presentation material was excellent. Member feedback was received as being interesting and informative with practical content relevant to practice procedure. THE POWER Of ULTRASOnICS Professor Fridus van der Weijden presented the May webinar on Monday, 30 May. The topic of this presentation was ‘The power of ultrasonics’. Professor Weijden graduated from the State University Dental School in Utrecht, The Netherlands and was accredited by the Dutch Society of Periodontology. He received accreditation as a ‘senior investigator’ by The Netherlands Institute for Dental Sciences in 2000 and in 2005 as an ‘implant-specialist’ by the Dutch Society of Oral Implantology. Professor Weijden is a frequent lecturer in postgraduate courses and the author of The Power of Ultrasonics and the co-author and co-editor of Preventive Dentistry. It was observed that 83.3% of participants in this webinar had not attended a presentation on this subject matter previously. Professor Weijden’s presentation covered a wide range of ultrasonic topics including: • The latest in ultrasonic treatment; • Guidelines for working mechanism and ultilisation of ultrasonic instruments; • Effective instrumentation and patient comfort; • Prevention of RSI-related complaints; • Scaling versus root planing; • Management of furcation; • Prevention of contaminated aerosols; • Other applications of ultrasound technology; and • The cavitation effect.
