6 AUGUST 2011 June 2011 meeting Report of federal executive report The Federal Executive of the Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) met at its premises in St Leonards on 30 June and 1 July 2011. During the Federal Executive Meeting, the following major items of interest were considered: • A building report was provided by the Chief Executive Officer that dealt with the issue of the possible installation of a passenger lift within the premises. Federal Executive provided approval for preliminary investigations to be conducted that would include a formal Development Application to Council. Approval was also provided for some substantial roofing repairs to be undertaken. • The Treasurer, Dr Carmelo Bonanno, delivered various financial reports regarding the ADA’s Schedule of Investments, Income and Expenditure to Date. Reports were consistent with budget expectations. • A report was received indicating that the 2011 Australian Dental Association Directory would be distributed to members with the July edition of the ADA News Bulletin. Statistics regarding the readership of the Australian Dentist e-Newsletter were reviewed revealing that it was widely read by the membership. MIMS online usage statistics reveal similar high utilisation by members. • A new dental assisting brochure has now been prepared and will be available shortly for distribution. • A new financial product with OzForex has been accepted and details of this will be available on the ADA website. • A new publication Social Media in the Professional Environment will be prepared shortly and be available to all ADA members to provide an easy to read guideline on how to maintain professional standards in the online world. • Congratulations were extended by Federal Executive to Dr John Lockwood AM, Dr Narren Chellappah AM, and Professor Newell Johnson CMG on their recent Queen’s Birthday awards. • Further preparations were undertaken for the Federal Council Governance weekend. A proposal was received from Board Matters which was reviewed and accepted by Federal Executive. Discussions also occurred in relation to a survey to be conducted with ADA members regarding their perceptions of the ADA and activities members wish to the Association to pursue on their behalf. Members are encouraged to participate in this survey when it is conducted. • Final preparations were discussed in relation to the ADA’s Dental Health Week 2011. • A report was received of the meeting of the Advisory Board of the ADA Foundation. • A report was received regarding the attendance of the President and CEO in Canberra upon the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon MP and departmental officials. Reports of this were included in the June National Dental Update published in the July 2011 edition of the News Bulletin. • Ongoing deliberations took place in relation to the activities of Medicare Australia in relation to their audit of members who have provided services under the Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Scheme. Correspondence between the ADA and the Minister for Human Services, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, was reviewed. At the time of preparation of this report, a meeting with the Minister had been scheduled for 13 July 2011. • A report received from the Rural Oral Health Advisory Panel was considered with recommendations proposed by the Panel adopted by Federal Executive. Dr Bruce Simmons was appointed as the ADA’s representative to attend the National Rural Health Alliance CouncilFest in September 2011. • Detailed final reports from the 2011 Australian Dental Congress in Brisbane were received and considered by Federal Executive as were reports from the Local Organising Committee in conjunction with the Australian Dental Congress 2013 to be conducted in Melbourne. • Federal Executive met with Mr Bill Lawrence and Professor Margaret Banks from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare (ACSQHC). ACSQHC outlined the work they still needed to complete. The discussions then centred on the progress to be undertaken in relation to the implementation of Practice Accreditation for Dental Practices. Ongoing representation will be made by the ADA to the ACSQHC to ensure that the accreditation process created is one that will be both economic and relevant to dental practice. • Various draft policy statements prepared by the FDI World Dental Federation were considered and submissions will be made to FDI in relation to those draft policy statements. • Reports of activities of the various Branches and other ADA Committees and Special Purpose Committees were received. • Federal Executive will next meet on 4 and 5 August 2011 at St Leonards.
