DentaFile Dental Record Systems PO Box 40 Doncaster East, Victoria 3109 Tel 03 9848 3193 Fax 03 9840 1433 Australia’s health system has an enviable record internationally, but a growing need for healthcare reform has been recognised to prepare Australia for the future, to make the system sustainable, to maintain our high standards and to meet new demand. The drivers for this reform include an ageing population, an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases, advances in medical technology and knowledge, better informed health consumers and a need to strengthen the safety and quality of healthcare. Integral to healthcare reform is e-Health. e-Health will enhance healthcare by enabling access to the right information, for the right person, at the right time and place. It is about seamless information flow across healthcare professionals, hospitals, pathology labs, pharmacists and more. The facts can be startling. Currently, 25 per cent of a clinician’s time is spent collecting information rather than administering care;1 53 per cent of medication mistakes are considered ‘definitely preventable’ 2 and up to 18 per cent of medical errors are attributed to inadequate availability of patient information.3 The electronic exchange of clinical information such as discharge summaries, referrals, pathology and radiology requests and reports, prescriptions and medication histories promises to help overcome problems in healthcare associated with the ineffective use of information and communications technology. The benefits of a national e-Health system will apply to the entire health sector by having more accurate, timely and reliable clinical information available to make informed clinical decisions. nATIOnAL E-HEALTH TRAnSITIOn AUTHORITy The National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) has been established to accelerate the adoption of e-Health by supporting the process of reform in the Australian health sector. NEHTA has a Clinical Leads Program with over 60 members who play a pivotal role by providing clinical input to NEHTA’s work program. Dr Neil Hewson, past Federal President of the Australian Dental Association Inc., is one of the Clinical Leads working with NEHTA and is excited about the benefits that e-Health will bring to dentistry. “I believe e-Health has great potential to assist dentists to provide quality and safe dental care to their patients” said Dr Hewson. He also noted, “No longer will dentists have to guess what the pink tablet or blood pressure tablet is as they will be able to view and download their patients’ medications, allergies, medical history and immunisations via the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR). In addition to the PCEHR, dentists will be able to prescribe medications, securely transfer patient records, send referral letters, receive reports and so on electronically. In addition to assisting dentists to provide quality dental care, other benefits include potential efficiencies and associated cost savings and a lower environmental impact for their practices.” Dr Hewson encourages all dentists to participate fully in e-Health as it is progressively rolled out. A requirement for a safe and secure e-Health system is the ability to uniquely identify everyone involved in a single healthcare transaction. This includes the person receiving healthcare, the person administering healthcare and the place where the healthcare is administered. Dentists set to gain from e-Health
