ADA NEWS OCT 11:Layout 1 2/9/11 3:57 PM Page 1 These figures do not portray the Private Health Insurance (PHI) industry in a good light and the ADA has called for PHI to increase dental rebates for all dental services annually. Members may be interested in reviewing the ADA’s Submission to the Australian Senate on PHI by visiting www.ada.org.au and following the link to submissions. They may also wish to refer patients to the ADA’s Private Health Insurance Check-Up also on the ADA website at: www.ada.org.au/private health insurance/essential questions. This is aimed to provide the public with the key issues they need to address when considering private health insurance. POLICY dRIvEn EvIdEnCE MAKInG As mentioned above, an ADA delegation attended the FDI World Dental Congress held in Mexico City, Mexico, from 14–17 September 2011. The ADA delegation attended several significant meetings with various national dental associations including the American, British, Canadian, Japanese, Korean and New Zealand Dental Associations. During these meetings the title phrase – ‘policy driven evidence making’ was used to describe how in some countries around the world governments and bureaucracies have agendas and provide distorted evidence to support a position. I am continually surprised, given the cultural differences that exist between many countries, how similar the issues of dental politics are throughout the world. Of course, the heading should be ‘evidence driven policy making’. I am able to assure you that the ADA has many issues that it advocates on behalf of members but they are always evidenced- based to provide members with the continuity of sound advice. A full report of the ADA’s delegation activities at FDI will be published in a future issue of the News Bulletin. president’s comments
