16 OCTOBER 2011 The ADAinteract-CPD Rural and Remote webinars are a great way of making educational material available to members nationally throughout Australia. CPd COnTEnT The CPD content offered by these webinars is scientifically or practically based addressing contemporary clinical and professional issues. Preservation of the information retained by registered dental practitioners during these webinars assists in building the requirements of the Dental Board of Australia’s professional registration standard during the period of registration applied for. EndOdOnTIC PRObLEM SOLvInG Endodontic problem solving was the topic presented by Dr Michelle Heffernan on Wednesday, 20 July 2011. In this webinar presentation, Dr Heffernan emphasised that problem solving skills are often necessary from the early treatment stages of diagnosis right through to post-treatment. This lecture addressed three key steps in endodontic problem solving. A comment from her lecture, “In endodontics, if you are given lemons learn how to make lemonade!” Dr Heffernan is the Head of Discipline of Endodontics at the University of Sydney. She also provides surgical and non-surgical endodontic treatment for her patients in her private practice, BMA House Endodontists. Dr Heffernan’s dental career started at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA, where she obtained a degree in dental hygiene and then her dental degree. She is a prominent lecturer and clinical educator. Dr Heffernan has introduced rotary endodontics and the use of microscopes to the student clinics at the University of Sydney. She has received multiple awards for her teaching. She started the endodontic teaching and curriculum at Charles Sturt University in Orange, NSW. Dr Heffernan is the current Vice President of the Eastern Suburbs Dental Group and also lectures in the USA and New Zealand. PHARMACOLOGY: USE Of AnALGESICS And AnTIbIOTICS Dr Paul Sambrook, who presented the webinar – Pharmacology: Use of Analgesics and Antibiotics on Tuesday, 30 August, is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon based in Adelaide. He obtained his basic dental and medical degrees from the University of Adelaide as well as post graduate qualifications. Following completion of the specialist training program and acquisition of The Fellowship FRACDS (OMS) in 1990 he has practised as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Paul is the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, South Australian Dental Service, Royal Adelaide Hospital and Head of Discipline Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Special Needs Dentistry, School of Dentistry, the University of Adelaide. He is the Assistant Dean, Learning and Teaching (Undergraduate) at the Dental School.
