5 NOVEMBER 2011 OCTOBER 2011 mEETing Report of federal executive report The Federal Executive of the Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) met in Adelaide on 13 and 14 October 2011 preceding the ADA Federal Council and Branch President’s Governance Meeting conducted on 15 and 16 October 2011. During the Federal Executive Meeting, the following major items of interest were discussed: • A final cost estimate for the installation of a lift at the ADA Inc. premises was received and considered. An evaluation will now be undertaken of the impact the installation of the lift will have upon valuation of the property. • The Federal Treasurer, Dr Carmelo Bonanno delivered various financial reports concerning the ADA’s investments, income and expenditure. These reports were noted. It will be recommended to Federal Council that Messrs Crowe Horwath be appointed the ADA auditors for the financial year ending 30 June 2012. • A review of progress for the preparation of the 2013 Australian Dental Congress to be conducted in Melbourne was undertaken. • A draft ADA Operational Plan in conjunction with the Strategic Plan was presented by the CEO and a copy conveyed to Federal Council. • Preparations were undertaken by Federal Executive in relation to the Governance weekend to be conducted on the weekend following the meeting. • A report prepared by Porter Novelli was received regarding the Dental Health Week 2011 activities. It indicated that the messages developed for the Dental Health Week were disseminated widely, both to the profession and the community. • Media material to be utilised in conjunction with the 2011 Babies and Toddler’s Oral Health Awareness Campaign to be conducted later in the year was reviewed. These media releases will be published on the ADA website in due course. • Dr Peter Alldritt provided a report from the group Monitoring Implementation of the National Oral Health Plan. This report will be forwarded to Federal Council and Dr Terry Pitsikas will now assume the position as the ADA’s representative on that Group. Those interested in viewing the report can do so by contacting the Editor of the News Bulletin. • The President briefly reported upon the activities of the National Advisory Council on Dental Health but was limited in his ability to report due to confidentiality agreements. However, it was noted that the Dental Hygienists’ Association of Australia had sought representation on the Council and the Minister’s response to the Hygienists’ Association’s request was considered. • Similarly, Dr Karin Alexander could report only briefly upon her participation in meetings with government regarding the development of the Voluntary Dental Intern Program. It is expected that further information will be produced by government in response to this program and this will be published in a future issue of the News Bulletin. • A comprehensive review was undertaken of the developments concerning the conduct of Medicare Australia’s audits of dentists in respect of the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme. Numerous media reports and correspondence concerning this issue were considered by Executive. Documentation has been published on the website pertaining to this and should members wish to obtain further information they should go to the ADA Inc. website www.ada.org.au. • Considerable information was provided and analysed by Federal Executive in relation to dental workforce issues. It was agreed that further research would need to be undertaken in relation to dental workforce. Arrangements will be made for research to be conducted by external providers. Preliminary information will be sought from AHPRA and/or the Dental Board of Australia along with Skills Australia. • A report was received in relation to the ADA Interact-CPD webinar held on 30 August involving Dr Paul Sambrook. Federal Executive wishes to convey special thanks to Dr Sambrook for his participation in this webinar presentation despite him being ill at the time. • The ADA’s Digital Media Library and National Library Services were reviewed. • A report was received from the accountant assisting the ADA in relation to the ADA’s application on behalf of dental specialists to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in relation to service trusts. The accountant will be contacting specialists who nominated to assist in this process and will be providing further information to the ATO to advance the ruling on service trusts. • A report from the ADA IR and HR Advisory Services was reviewed, noting there had been a significant increase in the utilisation of this service by members. In some states there had been a 33 per cent increase in enquiries. • It was also noted that with the impending implementation of the National Work, Health and Safety Act an education program for ADA members would be undertaken in forthcoming publications and the publication of an Occupational Health and Safety Manual. Reports regarding the development of the education program will be posted on the ADA website. • Reports from various Branch Councils were reviewed. • A preliminary report was received on the ADA’s participation in the recent FDI World Dental Federation meeting held in Mexico. • Federal Executive received a request for financial assistance from the Australian Dental Research Foundation. A recommendation will be made to Federal Council at its November meeting in relation to this request. • Reports were received from the Schedule and Third Party Committee; the Dental Instruments, Materials and Equipment Committee; Infection Control Committee; Dental Therapeutics Committee; Policy Committee; SPC on Dental Sustainability; SPC on Dental Volunteers; SPC on Sedation; and SPC on Dental Practice Accreditation Implementation. Federal Executive will now not meet again until 8 and 9 December 2011. However, Federal Council of the Association will meet on 17 and 18 November 2011. Robert Boyd-Boland Chief Executive Officer
